Feels-Like Temperature Calculator
Last updated: 2026-06-25
The feels-like temperature adds the effect of wind (wind chill) and humidity (heat index) to the actual air temperature to reflect what your body really feels. In winter stronger wind feels colder; in summer higher humidity feels hotter.
Enter temperature, wind speed and humidity to see the feels-like temperature along with the outdoor suitability (Good, Fair, Caution, Danger) for four activities: fishing, hiking, cycling and tennis.

The feels-like temperature is an estimate based on standard wind chill and heat index formulas. For actual weather alerts and safety decisions, rely on your official national weather service.
How to use
- Enter temperature — Enter the current air temperature in degrees Celsius (°C). Use a minus sign (-) for below freezing.
- Enter wind and humidity — Enter wind speed (m/s) and relative humidity (%). If unknown, leave the defaults.
- Read the result — Press Calculate to show the feels-like temperature and the fishing, hiking, cycling and tennis suitability in a table.
How feels-like temperature works and activity thresholds
The feels-like (apparent) temperature reflects how the human body actually perceives temperature once wind and humidity are taken into account. On cold days, wind strips away the warm layer of air around the skin so it feels colder (wind chill); on hot days, high humidity makes sweat hard to evaporate so it feels hotter (heat index). This calculator applies the two formulas automatically depending on the temperature range.
| Activity | Good | Caution | Sensitive to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fishing | 5°C – 28°C | 0°C or below / 31°C or above | Long stationary time → cold |
| Hiking | 3°C – 25°C | -5°C or below / 30°C or above | Altitude, wind → cold & gusts |
| Cycling | 8°C – 28°C | 0°C or below / 32°C or above | Headwind, sweat → wind & heat |
| Tennis | 10°C – 30°C | 3°C or below / 33°C or above | High-intensity effort → heat |
Winter wind chill applies when the temperature is 10°C or below and wind exceeds 1.34 m/s (about 4.8 km/h). Summer heat index is meaningful at 27°C or above with humidity at 40% or higher; once the heat index passes 32°C, watch for heat illness. In mild ranges the feels-like temperature is almost the same as the actual air temperature.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Why is the feels-like temperature different from the actual temperature?
The feels-like temperature adds the effect of wind and humidity to the actual air temperature to reflect what the body really feels. In winter, stronger wind strips heat from the body so the feels-like temperature is lower than the air temperature (wind chill); in summer, high humidity makes sweat evaporate slowly so it feels hotter (heat index).
Which formulas does this calculator use?
When the temperature is 10°C or below and the wind exceeds 1.34 m/s it uses the North American wind chill formula; when the temperature is 27°C or above and humidity is 40% or higher it uses the US NWS heat index formula. In mild conditions it shows the feels-like temperature equal to the actual air temperature.
How is fishing, hiking, cycling and tennis suitability judged?
Each activity has different sensitivity to cold, heat and wind. Cycling and tennis are sensitive to wind and heat, while fishing involves long periods of standing still so it is more sensitive to cold. The calculator marks each activity Good, Fair, Caution or Danger using feels-like temperature ranges tuned to that activity.
What should I do if the feels-like temperature is in the danger range?
If the winter feels-like temperature drops well below freezing, the risk of frostbite and hypothermia rises, so wear insulating gear and shorten your activity. If the summer heat index passes 32°C there is a risk of heat illness, so drink water often, rest in the shade and avoid midday activity.
What if I don't know the wind speed?
If you don't know the exact wind speed you can keep the default of 2 m/s (light breeze). For a more accurate value, check the current wind speed in a local weather forecast or app and enter it.
